What Is TMD And How Is It Treated?

TMD stands for Temporomandibular Joint Disorder and is often confused with TMJ which stands for the joint itself. The TMJ is the joint that connects the jawbone to the skull. You have two, one on each side of your head. Even though it’s hard to diagnose a cause for TMD, the symptoms are painful, chronic, and can make life difficult. Some of the symptoms of TMJ include jaw or ear pain, neck or shoulder pain, chronic headaches or migraines, clicking sounds when you open and close your mouth, difficulty when chewing, and throat pain. TMD needs to be managed over time and requires a knowledgeable team to treat successfully.
The team at Allure Dental Arts in El Monte recognizes TMD as a painful, yet manageable condition that needs to be treated long term. That being said, we are able to come up with long term treatment plans that will help ease your pain and get your life back to normal. Although there is no cure for TMD, it can be treated with various medicines, mouth guards, dental work, and in some more severe cases, dental surgery.
